Planning for Quilt 2

I've decided to finally finish up this navy Pioneer Braid that's been hanging around for-EVER as a set of five panels. I found these fabric "bricks" at a quilt guild auction and could not pass them up. I think I paid maybe $1.25 for a huge bag of them. I was immediately excited to start a Pioneer Braid...so excited that I didn't even consult a pattern, I just decided I wanted a navy background. I cut up navy squares and started building up the braids. Unfortunately, as a newer quilter, I didn't quite get the dimensions correct, so what's going to happen when I put the panels together is that the points on one side are going to be obliterated, for the most part, since very few have a quarter-inch seam available.

You know what? That's ok. I will still love it.

As for settings, let's take a look at some options.

Option 1 are the alternating rows. Every other panel goes up, down. I'm finding this setting makes me slightly seasick.

Option 2 are the outside rows all going in the same direction with the center row going up. I'm on the fence over this setting - don't hate it, don't love it.

Option 3 is all the rows going in the same direction. I'm sorry it's sideways. Even if I modify the picture in a variety of programs, for some reason Blogger can't understand that I want this to be upright. [sigh] Perhaps you can still get the idea. I happen to be leaning toward this setting.

I am still deciding if I want to a) leave the 3-inch strip of navy and add 3-inch strips between the other rows, b) leave the 3-inch strip and use just 1-inch strips to join the other panels, or c) trim the strips to 2 1/2 and use the same for the additional panels. Oh delightful decisions! :)

I have 4 days to get the top finished, borders added, and backing prepped. I was thinking about just plain-jane navy so the braids seem to float, but also have this little idea floating around about doing a braid border as well. Think I'll see what the final dimensions are for the center first. I have a feeling it's going to be a really odd measurement that might be hard to fit special borders to.

I'm excited to quilt this one. I'm trying to talk myself into doing freehand, since I chickened out decided against that on the Swapping Stars quilt.

Pioneer Braid is quilted!

So we've made it through Spring Break around here - took the whole week off to play with my kiddos and get Pioneer Braid quilted. Happy to say, it went great! My folks came for a few days so I could toddle off to the quilt shop guilt-free! First to decide on setting... Finally decided that the up and down pattern didn't make me too seasick after all. Left the 3 inch strip border on the center row and went with 2 inch strips between the remaining rows. I like how that turned out. Now my original plan was a solid navy border and going to bed before midnight. Around 5 PM I got this wild hair of an idea...piano keys. Now mind you, I still had the backing to prep and I didn't have ANY pre-cut bricks left. I'd literally used every single one I had won in the auction, plus many of my own scraps. You can see my "audition border" for the piano keys at the top - I only made it 10 bricks long, telling myself that if I didn't like it, I'd go back to the s...

No Loss of Enthusiasm Here!

11 months, 12 quilts, 1 quilter. Such a premise. Such a failure. And yet. Today is Winston Churchill Day. I know folks have issues with him; political folks; WWII history folks. I don't know where I stand on any of that, but I like that he's very quotable. So this is where I am today. Going from failure to failure until at last I've arrived at success, however long it takes. It was audacious to set a big quilting goal for myself. And in the trying, perhaps fail. But I look back at this attempt with pride, not defeat. Because while I didn't make my stated goal, I certainly made more progress than I ever would had I not set it...and quite bluntly, I made more progress on learning to quilt than I have in the previous 15 or so years I've been doing it. Yes, I still have some bindings to add. Yup, I still have some labels to create. But by the end of 11 months, I managed to quilt 6 quilts. Unless you've ever wrestled with a big quilt and won, you...
