A-binding we will go...

Seems like forever since I posted any progress. I've got the binding completely handstiched down on Swapping Stars. This weekend: the LABEL and then the pictures to show it's actually, truly, start-to-finish done! Hurrah!

That said, it's June already. Where in the world does the time go?

I've been looking at my list and I noted one quilt missing from the list - Star Mountain. Star Mountain is a king size quilt made of swap blocks from three different swaps I was in with the same group of gals through our online group. It has two blocks - Sawtooth Stars and Delectable Mountains - so now you see why it's called Star Mountain. I never said I was creative in naming my quilts.

Anyway, I quilted Star Mountain in Dec 2011, so I was thinking it technically would not count for my challenge. Except for one thing - I didn't get the binding stitched down or a label put on. Oh, the binding is ON the quilt. One side of the quilt. I handstitch my bindings and so since Dec, this quilt has been on my bed without a completed binding. So six months. Unfinished.

The purpose of my challenge is to FINISH what I start, something I'm notoriously bad at in regard to quilts and craft projects. So I've rethought my initial reaction and have decided that Star Mountain will qualify because it was not finished when I started this challenge and it's still NOT finished today. So for quilt number 3, I will be binding and labeling Star Mountain. I love this quilt, by the way. It's quite possibly one of my all time favorite quilts I've made. And it's HUGE. 110 by 110. So it's 440 inches of binding extravaganza awaiting me! That's probably the entire 4 seasons of Farscape with the movie finale Peacekeeper Wars thrown in twice for good measure.

I also need to get the binding on Pioneer Braid. Right now, it's hanging on my stair railing, raggedy edges and all. Each time I walk past it I smile a little as I look at the freehand quilting I did on it. I've learned so much doing this challenge. The year may be nearly half over, but I'm still pressing on.

Pioneer Braid is quilted!

So we've made it through Spring Break around here - took the whole week off to play with my kiddos and get Pioneer Braid quilted. Happy to say, it went great! My folks came for a few days so I could toddle off to the quilt shop guilt-free! First to decide on setting... Finally decided that the up and down pattern didn't make me too seasick after all. Left the 3 inch strip border on the center row and went with 2 inch strips between the remaining rows. I like how that turned out. Now my original plan was a solid navy border and going to bed before midnight. Around 5 PM I got this wild hair of an idea...piano keys. Now mind you, I still had the backing to prep and I didn't have ANY pre-cut bricks left. I'd literally used every single one I had won in the auction, plus many of my own scraps. You can see my "audition border" for the piano keys at the top - I only made it 10 bricks long, telling myself that if I didn't like it, I'd go back to the s...

No Loss of Enthusiasm Here!

11 months, 12 quilts, 1 quilter. Such a premise. Such a failure. And yet. Today is Winston Churchill Day. I know folks have issues with him; political folks; WWII history folks. I don't know where I stand on any of that, but I like that he's very quotable. So this is where I am today. Going from failure to failure until at last I've arrived at success, however long it takes. It was audacious to set a big quilting goal for myself. And in the trying, perhaps fail. But I look back at this attempt with pride, not defeat. Because while I didn't make my stated goal, I certainly made more progress than I ever would had I not set it...and quite bluntly, I made more progress on learning to quilt than I have in the previous 15 or so years I've been doing it. Yes, I still have some bindings to add. Yup, I still have some labels to create. But by the end of 11 months, I managed to quilt 6 quilts. Unless you've ever wrestled with a big quilt and won, you...
